Oaklee is marking National Biodiversity Week 2026, which takes place from Friday 15 to Sunday 24 May, by highlighting a series of biodiversity enhancement projects planned across several of our communities this year.
National Biodiversity Week is organised by the Irish Environmental Network (IEN) and brings together communities, organisations and individuals across Ireland to celebrate nature, raise awareness of biodiversity, and encourage local action through a wide range of free events and activities nationwide.
Supporting Biodiversity Across Oaklee Communities
As part of Oaklee’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, biodiversity replenishment projects are being progressed at four Oaklee schemes located in:
Co. Kilkenny
Co. Westmeath
Co. Laois
Co. Offaly
These initiatives are designed to enhance local biodiversity while creating greener, more welcoming outdoor spaces for residents and the wider community.
What the Projects Will Include
Planned works across the four schemes will include:
Tree planting, including fruit trees
Planting of native and beneficial herbs
Installation of bug houses to support pollinators
Sustainable seating for shared outdoor spaces
An upgrade to an existing pond to improve habitats for wildlife
Oaklee staff and residents will be actively involved in the delivery of these projects, with on‑site activity planned for June and July. This collaborative approach is intended to strengthen resident engagement, support positive staff–resident relationships and encourage shared ownership of local spaces.
Why Biodiversity Matters at Oaklee
Biodiversity plays an important role in creating healthy, resilient communities. Greener, nature‑rich estates can support resident wellbeing, help communities adapt to climate change, and deliver meaningful social value.
By investing in biodiversity projects, Oaklee aims to ensure that its communities are not only homes, but places where people and nature can thrive together.
Get Involved This Biodiversity Week
National Biodiversity Week offers hundreds of free events for all ages across Ireland, both in person and online. Residents, staff and communities are encouraged to explore events taking place in their area.

Oaklee’s Wider Sustainability Commitment
Oaklee’s biodiversity projects form part of a broader, organisation‑wide commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship and climate action. Through its Sustainability Strategy 2025–2028, Oaklee sets out how it will continue to create more energy‑efficient, climate‑resilient homes while supporting stronger, healthier communities across Ireland.
